As many of you know, Mote?s Education Division has taken the plunge into educational travel. We?ve teamed up with International Expeditions, a world leader in nature travel, and Cruise & Tour, which is handling reservations and all travel arrangements. We?ve already done one Galapagos expedition and we?re ready for the next one, setting sail July 17. Due to such high demand for this adventure, only two cabins remain ? so book now! As evidenced by Mote volunteer and member testimonials, this trip will be one of a kind: ?What an awesome trip! Our itinerary was excellent, the crew of the M/V Evolution were exceptional and our International Expedition guides were extremely knowledgeable. Mote put together a first-class expedition that really was a ?trip of a lifetime.? This definitely is the way to see the Galapagos Islands! Anyone considering a visit to this World Heritage location should give this trip serious consideration.? - Ken Spence, Mote member ?If you like Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium; if you like discovering the rich diversity, beauty, and mystery of life on land and sea; and if you wish to better understand the interdependence of the Earth's geology and biology, then you will love the Galapagos. I cannot imagine a better way to discover this natural wonderland than the International Expeditions tour. Along with our traveling companions, my wife and I feel privileged to have made this trip. If you can do this trip, don't miss the opportunity.? - Joe Lappin, Mote volunteer With your Mote connection, you will receive a MOTE DISCOUNT of $550 per person off the price others pay to take this same trip (depending on the cabin you choose, that?s a solid 10% discount). Your family and friends are welcome to join you on this exciting expedition and they too are eligible to receive the Mote discount. As an added bonus, a portion of your trip proceeds will support Mote?s efforts in research and education. For more information, please see the e-brochure at http://www.cruise-tour.com/MOTE.pdf or contact Cruise & Tour at 800-383-3131. It may sound like a clich?, but it?s true: There?s no place on earth like the Galapagos Islands. Feel free to call or email me with any questions. Kemp's ridleys are one of the smallest and rarest of the seven sea turtle species found worldwide. The nest is only the third Kemp's ridley nest ever laid and verified in Sarasota County. Beachgoer Alyson McCoy, of Ovieda, and staff from the Island House watched as the turtle came ashore to nest ? during the day. "My husband likes to dive for sharks teeth and I was sitting on the beach watching his dive flag when I saw the turtle," McCoy said. "I've seen loggerhead turtles nest before on New Smyrna Beach. But I've never seen one by accident and never in broad daylight!" Thinking quickly, McCoy ran to her room and grabbed her camera. Mote staff were later able to verify that the turtle was a Kemp's ridley based on her images. Kemp's ridleys are smaller, flatter and grayer than loggerheads, which usually emerge from the water to nest at night. Saturday's nest was Sarasota County's third Kemp's ridley - the first two were verified in 1999. The species usually nests on beaches of Taumalipas, Mexico, and Padre Island National Seashore, Texas. "It's exciting to have a Kemp's Ridley turn up in our county," said Tony Tucker, manager of Mote's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program. "In 2008, Florida only had 13 Kemp's ridley nests in the state. Kemp's ridley populations in Mexico and Texas are beginning to rebound strongly with help from a special program in Galveston, Texas, and protection at the nesting beach at Rancho Nuevo, Mexico. Also important is the fishing industry's adoption of turtle excluder devices, which protect turtles from being caught in shrimp trawls. Now, increases in Kemp's ridley populations might be bringing more stray, solitary nesters to Florida." This rare nest on Casey Key will be checked daily by Mote's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program, which has monitored 35 miles of Sarasota County shoreline for more than 28 years thanks to about 200 staff, interns, and volunteers. -- * Tim Oldread Director, Center for School and Public Programs Mote Marine Laboratory 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway Sarasota, FL 34236 Phone: 941-388-4441 Fax: 941-388-2174 Tim.Oldread at mote.org www.mote.org * From Ldeangelis at flaquarium.org Mon May 4 09:45:10 2009 From: Ldeangelis at flaquarium.org (Luisella DeAngelis) Date: Mon, 4 May 2009 09:45:10 -0400 Subject: [FMSEA] A Whale of a Tale Message-ID: <4F1EE87AC49A0840B6C73C9DBDC2A16D01587E41@jawfish.flaquarium.org> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------_=_NextPart_001_01C9CCBE.8BF0FCE3 Content-Type: multipart/related; type="multipart/alternative"; boundary="----_=_NextPart_002_01C9CCBE.8BF0FCE3" ------_=_NextPart_002_01C9CCBE.8BF0FCE3 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----_=_NextPart_003_01C9CCBE.8BF0FCE3" ------_=_NextPart_003_01C9CCBE.8BF0FCE3 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi all, One of my very dedicated teacher workshop participants constructed a large model of an orca with her students and now orca needs a home. Hi everyone,

Since I have not seen a note to this effect, I fir= st want to put a shout out to the organizers of the meeting and the leadership of FM= SEA=E2=80=A6..

Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication, = the meeting was wonderful!

I also want to put out a few thoughts while they a= re fresh in my mind.   I have numbered them belo= w to help facilitate discussion.

1.  At the meeting there were discussions about long term projects and other collaborative efforts.  One thing that came up was using the list serve to let folks know about possible funding mechanisms = and opportunities.   In case some folks hav= e not started to look for grants, in addition to the grants listed through = places like NSTA, or the sea grant opportunities, you may want to look at grants= .gov for federal grants and http://foundationcenter.org/ to look for private m= oney.

2.  In addition to obtain funding specifically for the growth and development of FMSEA, it m= ay be helpful to think about ways in which FMSEA can facilitate cross instituti= onal collaborations.  For example, as you know there are many funding opportunities that lend themselves to collaboratio= n and collaborative projects across the formal and informal education arenas or= across a contingency of organizations within either or these would probab= ly have an increased chance of funding.  Anothe= r active area of funding addresses collaborations at the intersection of re= search and education.  Clearly the SeaGrant projects can serve a wonderful model for successful collaborations across= institutions with vastly differing cultures and objectives.

3.  In a related thought, it seems to me that these efforts (and others) would be greatly facilitated by a membership directory that is either a password protected= link from the website or a pdf sent out occasionally to the list serve.

4.  One last thought,= at several points in the meeting, there were discussions about the growth= and strength of FMSEA.  This is fantastic!  As we all know, FMSEA is a chapter of NMEA which is an affiliate of NSTA which serves educators from= P-16.  What folks may not know or think much about, is that NMEA also has a relationship with AAAS=E2=80=94 Ameri= can Association for the Advancement of Science---which is primarily an organi= zation of research scientists.  I wish to highlight these relationships because I would love to see an increased ef= fort to include more college level faculty and research scientists in FMSEA. <= /p>

Just my thoughts,

Melissa

Hi all,

The lovely FCAT scores are out.&n= bsp; While I am NOT a fan of standardized testing, I still think it is important to think about these science scores.

For 5th graders, only 46% of the studen= ts received a 3 or higher which means that only 45% of students passed their= science component.   When you break thi= s down further it is even more disheartening as 34% of students were at gra= de level, 10% were considered proficient, and only 2% are considered advance= d.

Grade 8 looked strikingly similar with 41% of stud= ents receiving a 3 or higher (passed).  When you break this down further 32% of students were at grade level, 8% were considered proficient, and only 2% are considered advanced.  (This does not add up to 41% but there must have been some rounding).

Grade 11 is even worse with only 37% of students r= eceiving a 3 or higher (passed).  When you break this down further 30% of students were at grade level, 6% were considered= proficient, and only 1% are considered advanced.

More than half the children are failing science in= Florida, and by the time they are high school, almost two/thirds of the students are failing science.   What can we do as a communit= y of educators to effect this unacceptable situation? = ;

For this academic year, NSTA will select 185 teachers to participate as fellows in the 2009 Academy. NSTA Fellows chosen for the program receive a comprehensive membership package, online mentoring with trained mentors who teach in the same discipline, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of web-based professional development activities, including web seminars.
