Ironically, we may have to lobby to include science. For example, in Oregon, we measure schools by examining increases in math, reading, and writing scores, but science scores are not used in the "Oregon school report card" algorithm. Science tests are required only three times in a students 12 year run. Students are required to complete inquiry labs, but scores are not required to be reported. In the other subjects, the tests & scores are required grades 3-12 - every year. I am not sure what message this sends to science teachers or the families of the students in their classrooms, but it should be a concern both locally and nationally. We should be careful what we ask for, and conversely, what we have NOT asked for.
