The folks from SWMEA and the Monterey Bay Aquarium did a first rate job. Just a couple of notes and highlights: FMSEA continues to be the largest NMEA Chapter by a long shot. Our 500 members are more than twice any other chapter. Still, our percentage of membership that also hold NMEA membership is low (~11%). If you're a FMSEA member, but not a member of NMEA...why? Send me a note off-list. I'm interested in knowing if the price is too high, the benefits too few, or if there is just no interest. There was a great report on a national survey on ocean literacy. The good news for informal facilities is that people trust zoos and aquariums more than ever before. The bad news is that ocean and environmental issues are just not on the radar. There was a great report on a national survey on ocean literacy. The good n= ews for informal facilities is that people trust zoos and aquariums more th= an ever before. The bad news is that ocean and environmental issues are jus= t not on the radar. See the full results of the 22K+ person survey at http://theoceanproject.org.

A reminder...NMEA dues to increase January 2010. A reasonable increase, lon= g overdue. More in the next NMEA News.

NMEA 2010 is in Gatlinburg, TN and looks to be very well organized and even= more affordable. Details at http://www.nmeaweb.org. 2011 in Boston.

NMEA conferences continue to = evolve and improve, is a great place to learn new things, and develop a bro= ader marine education network. I'd encourage FMSEA members to consider putt= ing funds away and consider attending next year's meeting in Gatlinburg the= week of 18 July 2010. One thing that NMEA tries to do is have funding options and keep costs down= at conferences. The past two had limited low cost funding options. The= next one in Tennessee will be one where you have more options. I also kn= ow there is interest from number of Floridians who want to attend and are c= onsidering driving. It's a long, but doable drive for many, so there may = be options to do vanpooling that will cut down travel costs. Regarding disparity in national and chapter membership, this is a continuin= g topic. As a past President of NMEA, this has been discussed many times a= t board meetings. Some organizations require a national membership. That= was rejected by NMEA Board some time ago. In my view, hopefully it will c= ontinue to allow for maximum flexibility of those to be involved in marine = science ed at either local or national level. Having worked with 2 chapters (NAME and FMSEA) and attending many chapter a= nd national meetings, it's been my observation that chapter conferences hav= e more attendance from the formal classroom educator side due to funding an= d time constraints. Chapter conferences are generally 2 days, and held on a= weekend. NMEA conferences have increased up to 4-5 days, with special pr= ofessional development meetings and tag-on meetings adding another 2-3 days= , making it a good weeklong commitment. As a result, NMEA conferences = have more agency and non formal education involvement. To add my comments to those of Jim and Dawn--one of the= new things that the conference organizers did this year was to add field-based workshop days.  So...on the Thursday, I spent the morning at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the afternoon at Moss Landing Marine Labs.  At MBARI, we were given an overview of the facility, a t= our of the docks (all 3 of the research ships were in port, and one of the ROV'= s was on deck of one ship), the "testing tank" (where a piece of equipment called "Eye In The Sea" (EITS) was being tested), the O= cean Observing Systems labs (where one of the researchers talked to us about the various types of equipment being used) and we also got to make mini "ROV's" using PVC pipe, and try them out in a small swimming pool.  We had a great presentation by one of the newer scientists ther= e about her work using EITS to record video footage of deep sea creatures.&nb= sp; MBARI offers summer teacher institutes called "EARTH" and all of = the teacher-developed lesson plans and resources from these workshops are avail= able online at http://www.mbari.org/eart= h/ (Check out "lesson plan links" for "polished" lesson plans, bu= t also look at the schedules for each of the past workshops for other really = cool stuff--like downloadable video clips from EITS-- http://w= ww.mbari.org/earth/mar_tech/EITS/eits_video3.html)  We were able to participate in several of the activities, led by teachers w= ho are past participants of the EARTH program.  "Unpolished&quo= t; lesson plans are also available through the workshop links.  Each year= 's workshop has a different theme--2009 was Ocean Observing Systems, 2008= was marine microbiology and 2007 was Climate Change.  I've noticed that so= me of the menu bar options aren't working properly, at least on my computer, and have e-mailed the webmaster about that, so hopefully the= y'll be fixed shortly...

Check out the 2009 NMEA session titles, presenters = ;and resources from the links at http://itconf.mbayaq= .org/nmea2009/Program.htm.  Note that there may still be additional resources posted by presenters in coming days...

Hope to see many of you in Gatlinburg next year--hotel rooms will only be $99/night for up to 4 people, and it sounds like there&n= bsp;will be an abundance of fun activities for participants and for accompanying fam= ily members!

Subject: [FMSEA] NMEA 2009

Hi FMSEA,

NMEA 2009 was a first rate conference. The folks from SWMEA and the Montere= y Bay Aquarium did a first rate job. Just a couple of notes and highlights:
FMSEA continues to be the largest NMEA Chapter by a long shot. Our 500 memb= ers are more than twice any other chapter. Still, our percentage of membership = that also hold NMEA membership is low (~11%). If you're a FMSEA member, but not = a member of NMEA...why? Send me a note off-list. I'm interested in knowing if= the price is too high, the benefits too few, or if there is just no interest.
There was a great report on a national survey on ocean literacy. The good n= ews for informal facilities is that people trust zoos and aquariums more than e= ver before. The bad news is that ocean and environmental issues are just not on= the radar. See the full results of the 22K+ person survey at http://theoceanprojec= t.org.

A reminder...NMEA dues to increase January 2010. A reasonable increase, lon= g overdue. More in the next NMEA News.

NMEA 2010 is in Gatlinburg, TN and looks to be very wel= l organized and even more affordable. Details at http://www.nmeaweb.org. 2011 in Boston.

If you were at the conference, please take a minute to share your favorite moment or something you learned.

And don't forget out photo page at http://fmsea.shutterfly.com.

Right now we would be in your area during the week of 10 January 2010 and at the field station on Summerland Key (assuming it is available) during the week of 17 January. While I am still considering other options, I am most interested in visiting with some folks who are currently involved in marine biology research and professional resource managers who are working on resource allocation, water quality, or land use issues in Florida. The tentative plan is to spend some time in your region, time in the everglades, and about a week in the Keys (nothing confirmed at this point). For most of the students this will be there first time to visit the ocean and the experience alone will be overwhelming, but I also want to make sure our trip has an academic component that exposes students to some of the current natural resource issues of the day. The students will be required to keep a journal of their experiences, and they will be required to be working on an approved research topic. Before the trip they will have to submit a research proposal regarding one of the areas listed above. We have bright and motivated students who will impress you with their work ethic and enthusiasm for learning. Any contacts you can help me with will be greatly appreciated. By the way can you forward my message to Dan Gallagher? Perhaps we can then begin to communicate about the possibility of us using the Summerland Key field station. Thanks Jim for your help. Scientific keynote presenters and education facilitators will work with participants to delve into the benefits of ocean exploration targeting climate change, energy, human health and ocean health. Interact with scientists, converse and share classroom applications with other educators, and find a wealth of multimedia resources. The workshop will introduce the first in a series of Leader?s Guides for Classroom Explorers Why Do We Explore? with associated exploration lessons and hands-on activities.
