Just a friendly FMSEA reminder that this Friday, April 3 is the deadline for presentation proposals for the upcoming Annual Conference, May 15 - 17 at Mote Marine Lab. Information attached.
And in case you need a little incentive...
Thanks to the generosity of our local school district, we will have an ActivBoard available for a limited number of presentations. This could make for some very cool sessions.
Feel free to email me with any questions or proposals.
Thanks,
Tim

Hi everyone,
As the Florida Marine Science Educators annual conference is fast
approaching, we've got a couple of new details I thought I would share
with you.
We've upgraded our Friday night event. After our Keynote by Mote founder
Dr. Eugenie Clark, we'll move into the galleries of Mote's Goldstein
Marine Mammal Center for dinner and drinks. As you enjoy your meal among
the dolphin, manatee and sea turtle exhibits, we'll also be offering
exclusive behind-the-scenes access and special presentations by Mote
trainers and research staff. This enhanced Friday evening experience is
included in your registration fee.
We're also pleased to announce that through a partnership with the
Sarasota School District, Promethean and local distributer Logical
Choice Technologies, we will have an interactive whiteboard available in
one of our presentation rooms. Do you have a killer ActivBoard marine
science activity? It's not too late to submit a proposal.
Speaking of deadlines, there are some important ones coming up...
*April 3* is the deadline for *presentations proposals*. Yes, that's
tomorrow, but we still have room, so if you have an idea, make sure you
make contact with our Sessions Chair Tim Oldread
at the very least.
*April 14* is the deadline to *reserve a room* at the Helmsley at the
conference rate. We've booked 35 of our 40 rooms, so don't wait til the
last minute. We may have some additional rooms available, but don't risk
it. Contact the Helmsley at http://www.helmsleysandcastle.com/ or
1-800-225-2181.
*May 1* is the deadline for the *pre-registration* rate of $170. On-site
registration is $190 (but still worth every penny). May 1 is also the
deadline for *Exhibitor registration*. Both conference and and exhibitor
registration forms can be downloaded at http://www.mote.org.
The conference is really shaping up nicely. Please don't hesitate to
call me if you have questions.
We hope to see you there.

Name the NOAA Marine Debris Program's Fishy Friend!
Contest begins March 31st!
fish
The NOAA Marine Debris Program
has a special underwater
friend who helps them spread the word about the problems of marine
debris in our waters every day! Born in 2007, this fishy friend has
taken the Program's message of "Keep the sea free of debris!"
nationwide, and even internationally.
This unnamed fish has become quite a star and so, this Earth Month
(April 2009), the NOAA Marine Debris Program would like to name their
very special friend.
*About the NOAA Marine Debris Program - *Established in 2005, the NOAA
Marine Debris Program supports national and international efforts to
research, prevent, and reduce the impacts of marine debris. The
Program's goal is to protect and conserve our nation's natural
resources, oceans, and coastal waterways from the impacts of marine debris.
*Eligibility - *All students in grades 1 through 6 from all U.S.
state-recognized public, private, and home schools are eligible to
participate. Schools, including home schools, must be in compliance with
federal and state civil rights and nondiscrimination statutes. Students
may work individually, or in teams of no more than 5 students per team.
*Criteria for Naming - *Students are encouraged to visit the NOAA Marine
Debris Program website (www.MarineDebris.noaa.gov
) for information about
marine debris and material that features our special friend. We also ask
that you keep in mind some of our fishy friend's favorite key messages
when coming up with a name:
* "Keep the sea free of debris!"
* Reduce, reuse, and recycle!
* Marine debris is a global problem we can solve and by working
together we can make a difference.
*Entry Form -
*There should be one entry form per student or student team. Student
teams may be made up of no more than 5 students per team. Please ensure
that the entry form is filled out completely and legibly. The completed
form must be scanned and sent as a PDF document to
Carey.Morishige at noaa.gov . All entries
must be submitted via email no later than Wednesday, April 15, 2009.
*Competition Process** - *A NOAA awards panel will collect all entries
and select the top name.
*Time Frame*
April 15, 2009 - Deadline for receipt of completed entry form via email
April 30, 2009 - Winner will be notified
The winning name will be featured on the NOAA Marine Debris Program's
website and all future products featuring their fishy friend!
Additionally, the winning student or team will be featured on the
Program's website and in their newsletter, reaching over 100,000 people
each month!
Good luck & happy naming!

Name the NOAA Marine Debris Program=92s Fishy Friend!
Contest begins March 31st!
The NOAA Marine Debris Program
has a special underwater
friend who helps them spread the word about the
problems of marine debris in our waters every day! Born in 2007, this fishy
friend has taken the Program=92s message of =93Keep the sea free of debris!=
=94
nationwide, and even internationally.
This unnamed fish has become quite a star and so, this Earth Month (April
2009), the NOAA Marine Debris Program would like to name their very special
friend.
*About the NOAA Marine Debris Program - *Established in 2005, the NOAA
Marine Debris Program supports national and international efforts to
research, prevent, and reduce the impacts of marine debris. The Program=92s
goal is to protect and conserve our nation=92s natural resources, oceans, a=
nd
coastal waterways from the impacts of marine debris.
*Eligibility - *All students in grades 1 through 6 from all U.S.
state=96recognized public, private, and home schools are eligible to
participate. Schools, including home schools, must be in compliance with
federal and state civil rights and nondiscrimination statutes. Students may
work individually, or in teams of no more than 5 students per team.
*Criteria for Naming - *Students are encouraged to visit the NOAA Marine
Debris Program website
(www.MarineDebris.noaa.gov)
for information about marine debris and material that features our special
friend. We also ask that you keep in mind some of our fishy friend=92s
favorite key messages when coming up with a name:
- =93Keep the sea free of debris!=94
- Reduce, reuse, and recycle!
- Marine debris is a global problem we can solve and by working together
we can make a difference.
*Entry Form - *T=
here
should be one entry form per student or student team. Student teams may be
made up of no more than 5 students per team. Please ensure that the entry
form is filled out completely and legibly. The completed form must be
scanned and sent as a PDF document to Carey.Morishige at noaa.gov. All entries
must be submitted via email no later than Wednesday, April 15, 2009.
*Competition Process** - *A NOAA awards panel will collect all entries and
select the top name.
*Time Frame*
April 15, 2009 - Deadline for receipt of completed entry form via email
April 30, 2009 - Winner will be notified
The winning name will be featured on the NOAA Marine Debris Program=92s
website and all future products featuring their fishy friend! Additionally,
the winning student or team will be featured on the Program=92s website and=
in
their newsletter, reaching over 100,000 people each month!
Good luck & happy naming!

ACT needs your help in identifying science professionals to help set
national science standards. The National Assessment Governing Board
awarded a contract to ACT in September 2008 to set achievement levels
for the 2009 science NAEP at grades 4, 8, and 12. Part of this
initiative involves finding people to serve on the NAEP science
achievement levels panels to recommend cut scores for three levels of
achievement.
The standard setting panels will include science teachers and other
educators; however, the Governing Board also requires that about
one-third of the panel represent the general public. ACT could use
your assistance in identifying potential panelists who use science
training in their daily work. More specifically, these science-related
backgrounds can include life science, physical science, and earth or
space sciences. Specific occupations might include: engineers (e.g.,
chemical, environmental, civil), environmental planners, medical
professionals (e.g., doctors, nurses, chiropractors, pharmacists,
veterinarians, nutritionists), scientists (e.g., forensic, marine,
earth, soil conservation, space). Educators who are not in a typical
classroom setting, such as museum educators, would also be considered
general public representatives.
For detailed guidelines and information regarding our standard setting
meetings as well as more information on expenses and panelists=E2??

Just one of my regular pokes to remind everyone to think about the
Chapter Basket Competition for this year's Annual Conference. Every year
there is a gift basket competition between the Chapters during the
Silent Auction. Last year FMSEA did very well, out-earning every other
Chapter, but lost out due to a forgotten stipulation that we will not
dwell on. No, we will not...dwell...on it.
This year's conference is in California, so we need to think small
size/big value. Jocelyn O'Neil has already made a nice contribution.
Anyone else have anything to contribute, or ideas that would really pop?

Great news. Due to the fantastic response
to the conference this year, *the Helmsley Sandcastle has extended their
housing deadline to this Friday, April 17*. The Sandcastle is a great
Gulf-side resort that will be serving as the official conference hotel.
The conference rate of $119/night is also available for an extended stay
before or after the conference.
If you're teetering on your decision to join us, here are some
conference highlights:
Friday features *FREE workshops* for registered participants, including:
CPR and First Aid Certification, REEF Fish Identification Workshop, and
FMSEA's Aquatic Species Collection Certification.
Friday evening is highlighted by a keynote address from Mote's founder
*Dr. Eugenie Clark, the Shark Lady*, and unique animal care
presentations and behind-the-scenes peeks at Mote's Goldstein Marine
Mammal Center.
Saturday session highlights include programs on virtual field trips,
coral restoration, saltwater aquarium set-up, student-led dolphin
research, using interactive whiteboards, and more. There will be several
presentations from the *Florida Aquaculture Association*, a conference
sponsor, on how to create and use aquaculture themes and systems in your
classroom. We will also be featuring a conference track on *active Mote
research* with presentations from Mote scientists on: dolphins, whale
sharks, blue holes, fish tagging, sea turtles, red tide and still more.
During Saturday evening's banquet we will enjoy a talk from *bestselling
author Trevor Corson * that he described to
me as "a mix of fun biology (crustacean fornication, seaweed sex) along
with weird food science & history (lobsters used to be junk food, sushi
came from stinky fermented preserves), all wrapped in an overall message
about sustainability (whether buying something like lobster to cook at
home or going out for a fancy meal like sushi, our eating choices make a
difference, and we can find win-win ways to support seafood sustainability)"
How can you miss that? *Register now *

Anyone have a source for biofact display cases (clear, Plexiglass-like
boxes)? Particularly for specimens the size of shark jaws,
dolphin/manatee skulls, and such. As always, without sacrificing
quality too much, lower price is always better.
(Apologies for cross-postings.)
Thanks,

I highly recommend Potomac Display. They have a wide variety of boxes avail=

Message-ID: <49EDB776.4090602@mote.org>
Hi folks,
Anyone have recommendations for informal science classroom tables and
chairs? They should be fairly lightweight (transportable), sturdy, and
easily stored (either have the ability to be stacked or broken down).
We turnover over our classrooms a lot with the various programs that we
do, so we're constantly moving tables and chairs in and out, in and
out... Adjustable height would also be great. They should be (stain)
resistant to all the wear and tear we encounter - crayons, markers,
paints, etc. Oh, and water...and saltwater...and squid. So a dark and
smooth surface might be good. In an ideal world, the tables should also
be scratch resistant, as we do quite a few dissections. Our current
tables (Lifetime, www.shrunklink.com/bzaz )
have outlived their "lifetime" so we're looking for something a little
more appropriate for our needs. Chair suggestions would be much
appreciated as well.
(Apologies for cross-postings.)
Thanks for your ideas on SuperTables and WonderChairs,

We've had success with Alulite tables. They are lightweight, adjustable
and durable. Here is one the manufacturers website however there are
many different vendors carrying them so you might be able to get a
better price with someone you have regular dealings with.

I am trying to find a home for a display aquarium unit; see the attached
photo. The unit measures 48 inches wide, 26 inches deep and roughly 76
inches tall. It has a wet-dry filter in the base and an in-line pump
(located at the back of the unit with all of the plumbing). You can
install an ultraviolet sterilizer into the system and a protein skimmer.
The three levels have partitions to keep critters separated and there is
space for a 4 foot fluorescent light bulb on each level. The two
acrylic tops did not survive the move to our storage unit but they can
be replaced along with some of the PVC plumbing on the back of the unit.
If anyone has questions please let me know and I can answer them. The
unit will have to be picked up in Tallahassee (unless I am traveling in
your area and can fit it in our vehicle). If you are interested I need
an answer by next Friday May 1, 2009.

Good Monday Everybody,
I'd like to extend one more invitation to *register
*
for the Florida Marine Science Educators Association Annual Conference
held May 15-16, 2009 at Mote Marine Laboratory in sunny Sarasota,
Florida. /Pre-registration closes this Friday, May 1st/. On-site
registration will be still be a very reasonable $190, but why not save
$20 and *register now*
?
There is still room in all of our FREE workshops. Get your collection
certificate out of the way on Friday and leave Saturday for more
sessions. There is also room in all but one of our field trips,
including the kayak tour, the dive trip, and the combined tour of
G.Whiz: The Science Museum and Selby Botanical Gardens.
Friday night's evening event is headlined by Dr. Eugenie Clark, The
Shark Lady. Dr. Clark founded Mote nearly 55 years ago. She's a world
famous shark and fish scientist and the inspiration for hundreds, if not
thousands of careers in marine science (including mine). I started to
make a list of her honors and awards, but it got a little ridiculous.
Check her out at:

About JEAN-MICHEL COUSTEAU: OCEAN ADVENTURES
In April 2009, Jean-Michel Cousteau returns with two new expeditions in the
PBS signature environmental series JEAN-MICHEL COUSTEAU: OCEAN ADVENTURES
(pbs.org/kqed/oceanadventures
), produced by =
KQED
in San Francisco and Ocean Futures Society. Cousteau and his team of
explorers travel to the farthest reaches of the globe to learn the latest
discoveries about two of the most appealing marine mammals on earth, beluga
and orca whales. He and his acclaimed diving team, which includes his son,
Fabien, his daughter, Celine, as well as his collaborator, Holly Lohuis,
explore a thrilling panorama of natural beauty and learn about efforts to
protect these whales from the threats posed by human activities and climate
change. Combining science and discovery with expert storytelling and
astonishing high-definition footage, the new specials premiere nationally in
April with the one-hour "Sea Ghosts" (beluga whales) and the two-hour "Call
of the Killer Whale" (orcas) (check local listings).
