There are two vehicles for the delivery of those messages on the horizon: The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History's new Ocean Hall (opening September 25, 2008), and a new partnership with Earth Gauge (more on them in a minute). In the new ocean hall, there will be a NOAA kiosk with an information "ticker" streaming tips/facts about the world's ocean and its conservation. That feed will be replicated at a half-dozen mirror sites throughout the country (including Shedd, The Aquarium of the Pacific, and elsewhere). NMEA is partnering with NMEA and Earth Gauge to develop these messages. Earth Gauge is a weather and environment program of the National Environmental Education Foundation and the American Meteorological Society. Earth Gauge provides free environmental education materials to broadcast meteorologists that they can use on-air in their TV or radio forecasts and in other media. *Where do we come in?* NMEA has asked the Chapters to each come up with 20 messages about what makes the ocean important. This general theme can take the form of factoids that support the ocean's relevance or marine conservation tips. Each one should consist of a brief paragraph, with references, and a short, blurby sentence. I have attached two reference files. The excel file has examples of the paragraphs developed by NEEF educators. Each of these paragraphs contain some explanation about the situation and a "Viewer Tip." The tips in this file are too long. They should look more like the tips in the second attachment (the Word document). *What am I asking? *I'm asking FMSEA members to prepare *one paragraph/blurb *on an ocean issue that is important to them. Since I still feel shame about guilting certain members of the Board into submitting Session Proposals for this year's conference, I have made a personal vow not to resort to such crude tactics in this endeavor. *coughlesliecough*...ahhhh, ahhhhh, ahhh-chjeremey! Greetings all,

One of the conservation/education initiatives tied to NMEA's new Strategic Plan is to identify and deliver ocean conservation messages to the general public.

Where do we come in? NMEA has asked the Chapters to each come up with 20 messages about what makes the ocean important.

What am I asking? I'm asking FMSEA members to prepare one paragraph/blurb on an ocean issue that is important to them. And by 'them' I mean
you. The themes can be regional (i.e., Florida, or the Gulf of Mexico, or the Atlantic coast). Make sure you include references. Of course, I'll be preparing one, so all I really need is 19 more. I hope you can help. Please send your contribution by Friday, June 13. Everyone who sends a contribution will receive an original "Lost at Sea" comic strip (please don't let that deter you).

Feel free to pass the request along to anyone who you think would be willing to contribute.

Thanks in advance,
