ABOUT THE PROGRAM PolarTREC is a three-year (2007-2009) program of the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS) focusing on a wide variety of research activities occurring in both the Arctic and Antarctic during and after the International Polar Year (IPY). PolarTREC pairs K-12 teachers with researchers to improve science education through authentic polar research experiences. The program integrates research and education to produce a legacy of long-term teacher-researcher collaborations, improved teacher content knowledge, and broad public interest and engagement in polar science. The IPY presents an outstanding opportunity for researchers to share their passion for polar research through topics that naturally engage students and the wider public. PolarTREC is funded by the National Science Foundation. Through PolarTREC, over 40 U.S. teachers will spend two to six weeks in the Arctic or Antarctic, working closely with researchers in the field as an integral part of the science team. PolarTREC teachers and researchers will be matched based on similar goals and interests and teachers will be trained to meet the program requirements prior to the field season. While in the field, teachers and researchers will communicate extensively with their colleagues, communities, and students of all ages across the globe, using a variety of tools including satellite phones, online journals, podcasts, and interactive "Live from IPY" events and web-based seminars. Teachers and research projects will be selected and matched to fill the openings available. All major expenses associated with teacher participation in PolarTREC field experiences are covered by the program, including transportation to and from the field site, food, lodging, and substitute teacher costs. Did we win? Well... ...sort of. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our membership, I took a 40-gallon Tupperware tote of "stuff" up to Savannah with me. As we started to conceptualize how to present the "basket" we started to realize that we had a quandary. We had so much stuff, that putting it all in one basket and seeing it swooped up for (who knows) $75 would be a crime. So we went to the Auction folks and asked if we could split our stuff up and still have it count as one total. They said cool, so off we went. With the artistic direction of one Diane Lavarello, we created three drool-inducing baskets. Because I have an obsessive/competitive streak, we monitored the auction throughout the night and were thrilled to see our baskets go for a total cost of $244--at least $50 clear of any other chapter. Unfortunately for us, the Silent Auction folks seemed to have forgotten the stipulation they'd made and awarded the "unique and valuable prize" to the basket with the highest individual total (SAME, $190). By the time we figured out what happened...well, I didn't want to be "that guy." The point of the auction was to raise money for NMEA and we did that...better than anyone else. Well some of you may be wondering, after all those solicitations, whatever happened to that Chapter Basket competition at the Annual Conference? Did we win? Well...

Kudos to you FMSEA.
